Before and After – Mixed Media Collage

This is a mixed media collage that I believe I completed in 2011 (I need to start recording dates on the paintings!).  I took a photograph of the piece just after I had completed the collage portion.  As you can see from the finished painting, to integrate all the pieces to my satisfaction and get the color right, I had to paint (with acrylic) over a good deal of the collage at the upper half.  That was fine with me.  What I like about this painting most is the variety of papers that are visible in the lower portion (where the detail would be in a more realistic work).  I used bits from magazine pages for this one, and it is one of the first few paintings that I made using this technique.  The resource photo I used was one I took of the Oregon coast.  The painting is on 16 x 20 inch stretched canvas.  When I took the photo of the in-process version the light was not as bright outside.  The magazine bits are all somewhat lighter than in that photo.  The completed painting shows the truer colors.
